i received my new UV-b meter today. I was going to test the various grow lights i have and report the results here. It was an easy test...basically they all output about zero. I tested LED, metal halide, t5 fluorescent. About the only light that i could get a reading better than one was the ceramic metal halide at about 3 inches from the bulb..it was 5 uW/cm2 there. Not usable at that distance, it would cook the plant. In comparison my agromax t5 24 watt ho uv only spectrum bulb shows about 500 uW/cm2 at 12 inches. This is the uv-b level in miami at noon in july. On Friday,8 more of these bulbs will be delivered. Have to wait until Monday for the fixtures to arrive. When all the pieces get here my plan is to adjust the height of the uv lights to give 200 uW/cm2 to the plants at canopy level. I will then adjust the timers to slowly get them used to the UV. I figure it is something like hardening the plants in preparation for spring outdoor transplant. From that point on will be adjusting intensity and time of light based on plant observation. It will be a learning experience to find the optimum balance.
