I used a whole pail of sand. I think its genetic.

I used a log slab last year, wedged it under the overhanging fruit. I put a flexible piece of foam between the wood and the pumpkin, and then slipped a wedge under the wood to keep the log slab from moving. It worked like a charm and I was able to inspect the blossom end all season long, albeit with the aid of a phone that I could slip through the gap.
