Unfortunately, they are hard to deal with outside of using harsh pesticides. I have had good luck dusting my vine tips with diatomaceous earth to prevent them from biting the leaves and spreading disease. Also, after pollination, remove any male flowers before they open up. They are like a beacon for cucumber beetles.

The one time I tried neem oil it killed my entire plant in an hour so i cannot recommend it. If you follow the instructions very closely you can probably avoid that but it isn't worth it in my opinion. Are your parents ok with you using pesticides/fungicides?
