Planning on transplanting 4 plants into patch. Has anyone ever planted them back to back (approx 5ft apart) and train mains to go in opposite directions? Would do this for easier irrigation runs. Opinions.

I go 6 feet out from the edge of the patch and grow to the other edge, putting 2 or 3 plants alternating sides of the long edge (idk if that makes sense). If you had 2 in 1 patch it try to plant them opposite ends probably

So, four plants growing out from the center of the patch? Yes I've tried this and I think it could work. When I did it, the only trouble I had was the one headed northeast wasn't thrilled about heading away from the sun. I also had a line of trees in that direction so about halfway across the patch it refused to go any further in the direction it didn't want to go. The main vine lost dominance and it only invested energy into the side vines. After that I decided to not try that anymore. Now I generally grow only one plant and head it towards the south/ southeast/ southwest.

But I think you can probably get it to work. Assuming you have blue sky to the north I think they will grow towards blue sky (regardless of the direction of the sun). For me, the failure was that it did not want to grow into a dark hedgerow of trees.

Ive done it that way many times. Usually three to four feet apart and one heads East and one heads West.
