I do think the root nodes would be helpful if it was possible to keep them... alas it's not possible. Perhaps "blossom up" would solve this, but then there'd likely be other issues. It will probably remain a niche method for making extra pretty pumpkins but even if it's not super popular it can be an equally viable method and some ways it's better. There is a learning curve to it. The initial setup can be slightly tricky. The way you've got yours set up looks perfect. Well done.

I think blossom up would cause a birdbath and restrict nutrient flow in the vine
