I'm really getting po'd with this crappy weather. Only 65 & cloudy at 11am this morning. I am quickly becoming frustrated by this persistantly piss poor summer. All the fruit have slowed to a crawl.

What can a grower do to push his plants?

Be patient, bushing them at there young stage even 35 days old will cause them to mature even more. At first i waanted to push them and get them big, but with further research i am finding out that nice and steady with consistant feedings will help out in the long run. This cool weather has been a pain but my pumpkins still grew considerably 12 pounds when it was 11 c. This is a thought i had, when u have nice hot days you fertilize, pumpkin grows well, when cool days come you fert, you dont fert, it doesnt grow. I think its a big shock to plant. I think you can stunt the growth of the pumpkin, and cause the pumpkin to not reach its maximum growth. When cool weather comes you got to watch your watering, and your fert. ON cool days when u fert there is no sun to absorb all of then nutrients the fert has. I also believe that if you but all sorts of fert in the plant, it doesnt help all at once.

I am experiencing exactly the same weather conditions this year... The last few days temps didn't get over 17°C and at night they went down to 7°C and no sun.
Only thing I can do is wait and hope that the fruits will again start growing when better weather should arrive. Maybe they don't ripen out as fast as they would during hot weather and can grow a bit longer than usual.
But at the moment I am behind all previous growing years...
At this age my previous fruits usually grew about 3 to 5 inches in circ. per day but this year they only grow about 1 inch.
I sometimes feel like getting out the tiller and tilling everything under...

Yup weather has been no good, It was nice there for about
2 weeks straight, no rain hot humid days and warm nights,
but its been more cooler days and cold nights then hot and warm. Only things growing in my patch are the plants themselfs i still dont have ANY fruit set,I did have 2 on july 10th that did take and were growing well but animals got them :-(, Since then its been nothing but aborts, Ive got about 5 females on both plants as we speak but they may possibly abort before opeing because of all the rain and cooler nights. This is what happened my last go around. I'm hopeing to have at least ONE set first week in aug i may not grow a big one this year but am hopeing for some seeds from my own plants for next year.

Dave, all I can say is keep trying to set them. I still have some to pollinate on my test plants this week. It has finally begun to warm up today but the wind is still from the east which can't be good. The next two weeks appear to be near normal temps. Not a heat wave but at least gives us a tidbit of summer. My plants are crying out for warmth. This cool below average summer sure makes a good case for an early greenhouse enclosure.

Kahuna.....relax, kick back and have a cool one....its not all bad....pumpkins will keep growing, maybe abit slower and thats ok.....better slow and steady than a rollercoaster ride on a train going 35 -40 lbs per day, just hoping she doesn't split.......remember we are all in the same boat....it will all even out......better watch out if we all of a sudden get a heat wave, you might be wishing it was abit cooler when their blowing up ......having best season yet despite the cool weather...:0)

I think everyone has to be having better weather than us here in colo. as our lows for the past few weeks have been between 45-55 degrees, and our high temps have only been on average 73 degrees for the past 5 weeks, and we have had the wettest june and july on record with our high and low temps setting records for the coldest summer on record......so much for global warming.lol...I will take a week of 90s any day, as I think we have only had 2 or 3 days this whole season where the temp hit 90, and the 80s I can only wish for, as 60s & 70s is what we seem to be stuck with for highs.....GOOD SLEEPING WEATHER, BAD GROWING WEATHER...My fruits are only 1/4 of what they were last year at this time..It seems no records or personal bests will be coming from me or any of the other local growers here in colo....Thanks alot weather!!!! James Kane....

Hey Ben it is a bad thing when hail is prevalent, rain is heavy cold and never lets up with not A day of full sun in 4 weeks, and the mountains are geting snowed on with no warmth in sight for growing. The summer here is almost as depressing as winter this season, as I have yet to get a green bean, wax bean , zucchini, or for that matter any kind of vegetable matter to eat into my system period this season.....It stinks !!!And by the way forget tomato season they will all be green at harvest due to freezing..I guess colo has turned into lettuce & spinach / turnip/ beet heaven of the cold crops, and probably snowed in ski & board heaven this season with record precip& lows if it keeps going this brutal direction.......we will be up to our waist in snow by holloween if this trend continues.....So much for the garden....I guess there is always next season......JK...

Good Luck and may the SUN be with you and Shine as it has not done here in 6 weeks , except for 2 days in the past month and a half...with a full day of sun and cold......Avg. 4 hrs. of sun per. day 68 degrees for expected high temps.....nite avg. 55 degrees = 0 growth.....it stinks...

Wayne, I would take average temperatures but lately it has been far below average up here. Thunderstorms are coming out of the north east traveling to the southwest. This not a very common occurance in Ontario. I have not turned the water on my lawn yet and it is late July. Its the year without summer. Last one was around 1993 it was terrible that summer too. It rained every weekend in June and July but August was great that year. Lets hope for the same.

OH and we are also on water restrictions ( like I need to water anyway...) With colo.'s wettest years of the summer season on record....The gov't here just wants $$$$$, utilities dept....guess I am in trouble here now with a $300.00 per month gas & water & electric bill increase now because I didn't use much gas, water , or electicity during the summer....I guess non use = higher bills+ raises for all of the officials involved in the reduction of public utilities resources, due to lack of use of water, , electric ( air conditioners)....and so on which warrents a raise in taxes and all utilities customers....The system stinks, but it is an election year ..Examples will be made out of a lot of situations due to campaiging wheather right or wrong..mostly WRONG CORRUPTION $$$$$$, But we will all have to live with IT!!!!!!!! IT IS AN ELECTION YEAR......so get out the rotten egg ......and blow a big ol pumpkin fart with a huge one......

Another cool day with T-storms is forecast. High today of only 23*c normal is 26 or 27. Humid air mass is suposed to build in by this evening tiggering those pesky storms. Dark this morning at 6am as cloudy conditions obscure my patches. Kahuna is praying to the sun God for warmer air to funnel through the midwest. Long range is calling for nearly normal conditions for the next to weeks.

Sorry to say this, but the weather here has been dry, hot and magnificent. We haven't had any significant rainfall in weeks, and temps have been pushing 80-90* F every day. This has, however resulted in a huge number of forest fires in our province and people have been evacuated out of their homes, so we'd love some rain, if not for the pumpkins, for the forest fires!

High temp here in NEPA yesterday was 66 but the low was 60. Not best temps for a pumpkin especially in the summer but I guess it could have been worse.
