To sum it up I kept the whole pumpkin dry but also had a fan blowing air under it for the first half of the summer.

But then it got so big it squished itself out over the hole for the air... after that it was on its own.

Thanks everyone. Ps pumpkinpal I wanted to use your idea but the cardboard worked surprisingly well. But when it comes to trusting my ideas, proceed with caution... Be wise!
