Is the primary reason people put tents over their pumpkin to shield it from the sun, or to prevent water from accumulating around it?

Pretty much Andrej, sun, weather, rain, hail, etc., Being in Southern California where it never rains, most of us just use a white sheet.

Both are equally good reasons for me.

Yeah protect from sun scorch and also to keep the blossom and stem side dry because stem rot is a thing....at least with me this year. I did not have a tent.

Agree ^^. I grow next to 100 tr old Shingle Oaks and tents really help keep tree debris off the pumpkins. I also use a white sheet for the light since the angle of the sun is constantly changing and sometimes it can be hard to get 100% coverage with just the tent.
