I am trying to grow a giant pumpkin for the first time here in Japan. Things are going OK to this point and I have about five 30cm diameter pumpkins on one plant. I believe it’s best to cut back to one or two to try to make a big pumpkin. When should I cut back? Is it too late or can I cut back at this size? Should I cut back to one or two or three at this point?

Welcome Pure Luck! Its preferable to grow one fruit per plant and have that one on the main vine. Personally, I wait until my preferred fruit is the size of a soccer ball/basketball or so, and as long as it's still shiny, then I cull all other fruit. I might take them off one per day over the next few days just to be safe. If they get much larger, consider cutting halfway through the stem one day and then removing the fruit completely the next day.
