Hi, it is looking as if I might need to cull this seed. I was wondering if it was slow to start for anyone else, and the heat tolerance characteristics of the seed.

I think it may be heat tolerance characteristics. I also saw someone on YouTube growing a 1477 in New Mexico, and it seems to be iffy.

Mine has been very quick and appears to be heat tolerant. It did grow two leaves at the second node but appears to have grown out of it.

How much of that extra fertilizer did you splash on the leaves? Post a link to that picture so others can see before you do surgery.

Excess nitrate, possibly in conjunction with other nutrient levels, may cause plants to wilt easier? While I dont know the exact facts I do know its not all genetics. The nutritional profile of the plant/soil is hugely important in terms of resisting heat.

There's no reason to cull too early. Plant side by side and try to get the vines on the ground before culling, then you can decide which traits you think matter the most and place your bet. A horse that was slow out of the gate could be a winner. I've seen laggards turn into very good plants.

Mine also threw 2 leaves at an early node and displayed heat stress early on, but is growing well now

How odd, even mine threw a extra leaf at the 2nd node... Spudder, I actually have been feeding them well, and I haven't fertilized in a week cuz of the rains, but whenever I water they get between 1.3-2.3 ec of fertilizer.

The 1707 has bounced into action, and because it is laying down nicer than its backup, I might just go ahead with it.

Sankalp, the point I was trying to make to you was that that might be chem burn because even juat a little fine fertilizer spray that gets on young tender leaves can cause burn that does not show up instantly show up. Very easily done even when a person does not think they did. Anyway, good luck this year.

Thanks for the advice Spudder. I will make sure to be careful with the chem burn. Somehow the 1707 within the span of a week, has taken over in growth and now I'm finding myself in a new problem... My hoop house is outgrown, and the weather is still cool :C

Don't feel badly - I have to wait 'til tomorrow to plant anything out because although I dug 12 of 21 holes today, it'll be 39*F wherever the weather station is and it was 38.7 here 20 minutes ago; It's not the cool temps that I worry about, personally (although I've read that it can stunt some aspects of some growth periods of a plant) - it's the possibility of actual freezing. Gone are the days (2003?) when I used to have them under clear, 52-quart containers out there, each with a 40-watt bulb within to put plants out WAY ahead of time, lol---eg
PS---My 236 (1007 Brown X 2145 McMullen) is on par with the 1541.5 McMillin(s) and the 839 Sandercock(s) that are still in the cups, so, if rooting vigor and seed leaf size are good indications, then 'Woo-Hoo'! eg

The one that grew my 2424 last year looked iffy first 2 weeks so I put a backup in beside it. It grew out of it and I stayed with it. As for heat it did great last year but I had the moisture dialed in. 2552 genetics seem to like the heat. Hope she does well for you!
