I've thought about the heavy progeny this seed has produced as both the mother plant as well as the pollinator and intended making it the pollinator of 3 of 4 of my plants this season. Went to plant it out in the patch tonight and discovered the second true leaf was a set of second true leaves! Has anyone else had this condition with this seed? Does this have anything to do with my seed starting skills or is it a genetic characteristic of the seed? Thanx for any comments in advance, Crane

The one I grew last year was normal without the double leaves.

Mine was normal last year. Was slow to start but then really took off. The leaves were massive. I will also note in all my years of growing I have never seen a plant push roots as aggressively as that seed too! Maybe why they go so heavy?!?

We have grow quite a few of the 1747.5 Handy and they were all normal, I have not heard of any going double or flat vine. I would give it a little time and see what it does and plant a back up just in case.

Thank you all that have responded and those possibly yet to come. I guess it was the third set of leaves not the second as I pinched the second leaf to elimiate the tripod. I planted it and started a second as a back up. Sure looking for some of that heavy % like you all have achieved. Thanx, Crane

This seed goes HEAVY for most! There are so many seeds like the Handy that go mostly unplanted. I'm glad you put it in the ground and I know his wife would be proud that you're planting his seed!:)
I know the Oregon growers are happy and Steve is watching down on all his pumpkins being grown!

Well.....just about a month later and my 1747.5 Handy has become quite a beauty. The double leaf issue has gone away and she is a well rounded plant. She seems to have a good growth rate, color, and been the most heat tolerant of my plants during the few early hot days of the season. Really happy with her, now hoping for some of that heavy weighing fruit that she has shown capable of with some of you growers that have grown it in previous seasons. Crane
