The new revised point structure suggests a 178 inch long gourd is equal to a 2000 lb pumpkin.Interesting I thought a 140 inch would be more equal in relationship to history of grown fruits. Any thoughts on the new point structure?

Bubba,

Can you put this in context? If they've raised the bar because of a single very long gourd with no data points between that seems a little illogical.

Seeing as that would be a world record, it does seem a bit skewed

I like their point system in that it puts value in fruit weight or lenght relative to records vs master gardener fruit ranking from that season.I think it gives a more relevant number from year to year. Theres no obvious right or wrong way to do it.

A 178 inch long gourd should equal a 2700 lb pumpkin. I think it wpuld be more fun to get rid of any & all bias towards pumpkins or squash and put the smaller categories on an equal footing even though fewer people grow them.
GOod luck getting a bunch of pumpkin growers to get rid of their bias towards pumpkins.

Oh, and is there any question there needs to be a "giant flower" in the master gardener category? Sunflower or dahlia, either one should earn a lot of points !!!!!!

The 178 was established prior to Al Eatons WR. This makes it extremely out of balance.

1200 squash equals a 2000 lb pumpkin?
Seems a bit in favor of squash growers

I would think the GPC is Great PUMPKIN commonwealth.
just saying but hey its not a perfect world.

but we can favor squash growing if needed.

The scoring incentivizes growing a squash which is fine & good but maybe a little too good, because if you dont have a big squash you can pretty much forget winning it.
But you are correct Bubba... no one is asking for my opinion!
