I recieved some seeds from Northern Illinois with an unspecified family tree. The seeds look incredible, very large, tan, and plump. Some of the previous crosses came from seeds supplied by Dill. The grower they came from never got one over 505. I know, I know, a lot is up to the grower, no matter how good the genetics. Then yesterday I recieved some seeds of known parentage. One set was a 1061 Zehr x 484 Dunn = 639 Dunn, the seeds are flat white, average size. Then a set of 1006 Greer x 592 Dunn = 484 Dunn, these seeds are plump, tan, ok size. The question is, do bigger seeds make for bigger pumpkins? or is that the way the genetics have layed it out? I do not have a lot of space THIS YEAR for my garden. I will be having two vines in a wishbone formation. of course I want the two best selections, and I have 3 to choose from. Do I go with the monster seeds of uncertain parents. or go with the 'known' ??? Actually, I am already germinating the monster seeds, I just have a gut feeling about them. But I could be all wet, thinking bigger is better. I just need some input from my fellow pumpkineer's. Thanks again, and maybe this is the year someone south of the mason dixon line will break 1000 lbs. who ahhh!!!

Seed size has nothing to do with pumpkin size...Old Myth used to be the white ones threw huge.

Thanks... Was curious on that one. Being a new grower, I have a lot to learn. Just came out of the garden, I carefully, very carefully, dug through the soil around one of my seeds to take a peek, and woo hoo, it has sprung a root!! Then carefully, and oh so slowly replaced the soil..
it took 3 days... First, I filed the seed then soaked for 6 hours in lukewrm water, then direct into the pumpkin hill. I have kept it damp, not soaked. That seems to have done the trick. Now, hopefully in a few days it will break the surface. Today, I will be filing and soaking the last seeds I got the other day.. the ones I was questioning about. So, this year it will be mystery seeds..The ones that look so good! and the ones of proven quality. (639 Dunn, the white one's) lol
