I want to enter my pumpkins/squash in the event in Elk Grove the beginning of October. Others in the area start germinating in mid April. If I am to get the best weights possible out of my fruit, when should I start germinating?

The last frost is around the 20th. But April has some cold winds and it reallly hard on any type of squash or pumpkins. I have tried in the past to start early but it never really paid off. This year has been weird. March is acting more like May here. Last year it was about 45 during the day at this time. Today was about 85. Normal is about 65.

I don't start my seeds til around may 9th, you don't want those pumpkins sitting out in the patch drying up and losing weight. I think we are in for a hot summer. the plants will grow like weeds. Greg
