I have noted a number of posts here regarding people worrying that they will damage the cotyledon's removing the seed casing. That is a distinct possibility. However if the seeds are placed flat under the soil, as they would naturally be if they had just landed there, they naturally shed the outer shell of the seed as they germinate and push through the soil. When they are planted pointed end down they push themselves directly up, cutting through the soil with the seed coat in place and neccessitating manual removal and its inherant dangers. I have planted mine flat for several years now and they always come up clean this way. This year I started 14, 13 germinated, all 13 came up clean. I know it's too late for most folks, but something to keep in mind for next season.

I laid all 18 flat when I planted them, 11 came up with the shell attached. I wondered if my filing technique had anything to do with it?
I found it unusual...

Rule of thumb. Plant seed 1 1/2 times it's length deep in the potting soil. When I did that the seed has enough support to enable escape and emergence. If the potting soil cracks up will come the seed covers with the cotty's still hanging on. Remember in real life they don't get filed at all. That's just a little help we give them.

If you do this and they still drag the seed coats along just go figure? :)
