Its weird that the grass can reseed itself even when there is no grass for miles. I can confirm that sheep want to forage in that manner. Its anti intuitive to think that more animals would make a positive impact, but how it works is, its more animals for a shorter period of time, and then a longer time for the plants to recover afterwards. This is the correct way to get the maximum productivity from the ecosystem.

One of The problems is that you can succeessflly use traditional grazing practices in humid moist climates like those of western Europe and not create any desert expansion. But that doesn't mean it will work everywhere with out consequence. People tend to think "if it worked here, it will work there" So as the Europeans colonized much of the earth. They employed there traditional farming pracitces in the new lands too. They set up fences and let animals continuosly graze on a pasture. They didn't realize that it may work just fine in the new lands of the Eastern USA but it doesn't necessarily mean it will work in idaho, Texas, or the african savannah. The dust bowl was an early warning that these seasonally dry lands need to be treated carefully! As the Ogallala aquifer dries up, we need to remember the lesson of the dust bowl.

Even though he is in one of the wettest parts of Washington, my cattle friend up the road does the intense grazing and pasture rotation method. There's an advantage to it, even in wet areas. Although, maybe for him it has more to do with mudification than desertification.

I agree, very little carbon (organic matter) is stored on a heavily overgrazed field in all climates.
