That looks like a side vine that turned into a pumpkin stem to me. Why does that look odd to me? I see the split I get that but....

I have always been amazed at how carefully we tend our plants that we are growing for competition. all the work, the worry,
the time, the money etc. but remarkably and often with far less input these pumpkina will frequently grow pretty darn well by themselves if we leave them alone. I remember reading one of the old SNGPG articles about the early growers of Atlantic Giants back in the 60's and a 70's. One of the growers (I want to say his name was Helmut) believed that the biggest ones in his patch every year were destined to make it to the end and survive. That it was God's Will that determined the outcome!

Yep, first node off a secondary. Sat on its vine. I wonder if it would have made a difference terminating the vine at the fruit before it had a chance to rip.
