I put the plant marker in a hole in a brick. I lean it forward until its a finger width away. When it closes distance I move it back and do it again. Once I get to 80 days or the end of the tape that is what I use to make sure its still growing.

Thats awesome! Just made me think about years past and different things with other pumpkins. Travis G. Put the monster can against his and waited for it to push over?

A 3' bamboo stake for me; I have to be sure to put THAT one in at a steep angle, though, because I almost put my left eye out last year with a straight-up one - they're invisible head-on. I use it to see in the short term at 3/4" to 1/2" and less if it's still growing and re-locate it if I have to or to move the fruit. Plus, if the stake is bent I can twist it and that works, too. eg

Thats why I don't use a stake! Bamboo gashed my forehead last year bending down to check the blossom lol! I got picked on at work for getting beat up by a pumpkin : )
