You guys get more sun too. On the east coast we can have cloudy rainy days that can sometimes turn into weeks it seems! We could never grow an apple that colors up as nice as an apple from Eastern Washington or Oregon. This year was almost perfect where I am located.. Lots of sun with rain just in time.

More sun and less humidity, yes. Plus amazing minerals in the soil/ groundwater... I bet this would be the place to bag the watermelon WR.

35 miles from the "watermelon Capitol of the Pacific northwest"... That cant be a bad thing! But maybe its all just a silly dream.

HERMISTON, Ore. — Everyone knows Hermiston as the Watermelon Capital of the Pacific Northwest, but few realize it also has a claim to wizarding fame. Local historians (and at least one enthusiastic librarian with a fondness for British fantasy novels) insist that Hermiston is, in fact, the childhood hometown of none other than Hermione Granger of Harry Potter fame.

The story goes that the town was named after Hermione's great-grandfather, Archibald P. Hermiston, a legendary watermelon grower whose fruits were said to defy logic, gravity, and occasionally the USDA. Some locals swear the melons grew so large that ordinary farm equipment couldn't haul them—leading to whispered suspicions that magic was involved.

"These weren't your average picnic melons," says longtime resident Earl Jenkins. "I once saw one the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Took six draft horses and a very confused sheriff to get it into the county fair."

While official records remain suspiciously vague, a handful of residents insist they remember seeing a young Hermione visiting during the summers, helping at the watermelon patch and occasionally turning unsuspecting cantaloupes into hedgehogs.

The city has leaned into the legend, with businesses sporting names like Granger's Grocers and Hogwarts Hardware. The annual Watermelon Festival now features a "Magic Melon Contest," where gourds are judged not just on size, but also on their ability to mysteriously vanish from the judges' table.

Whether or not Hermiston truly birthed the brightest witch of her age, one thing is certain: its watermelons remain as close to magic as you can get in the Pacific Northwest.
