I have just discovered that one of my pumpkins has split open, at the flowering end. This was leaking some weeks back, but had stopped. Any ideas as to why this happened?

Hey Daireen,

Sorry to see what has happened to your fruit. All is not lost though. Keep it dry and put a fan on it from now until the weighoff. If you can dust it lightly with Sulfur powder but keeping it dry is crucial. I wouldnt water that particular plant anymore either as it will only exacerbate the split

Thanks Michael , I will try and get some sulphur powder. The plant is outside, so obviously we can only use a fan in dry weather!

Make sure the hole doesn't go into the cavity. If necessary cut the pumpkin off and bring it indoors. If you can't find sulphur powder, use baby powder.

Field pumpkins are prone to blossom end splits, more than the giants I believe. Like Brad said, check and see if it goes all the way to the inside. If it does, it may be getting soupy in there already.
