Hi everyone. Im new here, im french. (excuse me for my english!!)
I have a question. I growing a pumpkin, his weight is 350 lbs today, and he grow approx. 20 lbs per day.
Can you see here http://hpics.li/17a5ab7 and say me if i can cut or not the main stalk (at the line red). It is dangerous for the growth of the pumpkin?
Thank you Xavier from France

Yes you can cut the main vine after the fruit. I suggest you cut it about 3 cm after the fruit (where the vine is thinner, this will result in a smaller area of the wound from the cut). Treat the wound with sulfur dust and keep it dry. Is your pumpkin covered (greenhouse or a tarp or any other kind of roof)? If the pumpkin is not covered, make sure the hole (after cutting off the vine) does not point up. In this case, better try to cut diagonal (so that the upper part of the leftover vine serves as a little roof over the cut).
What I would do in your case, however, is to cut the main vine after the next leaf node (so that you can retain the first secondary after the fruit), there might be sufficient flexibility in the vine so that you can bend the remaining 20 cm of main vine away from the fruit. I had terminated the main vine in a similar way in 2012, see here:

...and next year: Don´t forget to create an S-curve in the vine.

Salut Xavier

Thank Pumpking.
I know i can easily cut the main vine when the pumpkin is a small baby, but i was afraid that to cut now affects the growth, because the sap leak for some hours , and decrease the growth during this time. The leak have to stop fast....
My pumpkin is outdoor, but he is cover, so he is dry ;)
