First year trying field pumpkins and I was wondering if multiple fruits are possible on larger sq footage. I'm doing two ( 162&81) and I'm going to give each plant about 250 sqft. Will that safely support 2 or should I stick with one. Also, where do most of you set fruit? Main or secondary. Thanks for any help...Paul

Paul, Last year was my first year and grew the 81 Wolf to over 400sq ft. Set the first FP to open on the first secondary and the first on the main was over 20 ft out. Both grew to 162 lbs. Maybe it was beginners luck but from my experience it didn't seem to matter where it set. all the best

I am growing the two 162 seeds and the first one I planted now covers over 800sq ft. for the longest time it kept aborting females, thought it would never set. just lately the appearance of the females changed; they were larger at the blossom end, and the stem was thicker than the pumpkin when it bloomed. the first one set is now larger than a football, but the stem at its thickest point is over 5" thick. I have never seen stems like this. I have not pruned the plant, for the longest time everyone I tried to set didn't take, so I just let the vine grow, covering the vine with dirt at every node (at first) until everything got chaotic. It has set 4 really nice looking ones, I hesitate to cut any off because others have aborted at a fairly large size, and this way I can get 4 different crosses with it for seeds.
