I have been thinking about all the mega's I have seen. I could be wrong, but when I look at a double or triple with a thin stem...I think 3-4 pounds. Thick stem, 3-4 fused maybe 5-6 pounds. I have only seen a 6-9 fused a few times..but grower error shut them down before they reached potential. Marv when he wrote his first tomato book, talked about mega's. Back then, a double was considered a rarity. What do you think you would have to see...to feel like you have a chance at WR or top competitive chances. There are mega's, and I think there are super-mega's...what should be the definition of super-mega?

When the entire truss is fused into just one blossom then you know you've probably got something good. I've missed a couple such opportunities because it does take somewhat optimal conditions to get a tomato to really grow properly.

I haven't seen one of the supermegas on my plants yet. I have megas but I'm guessing they are only 2 or 3 fused. If you get a supermega is it the only flower on the truss? How many 7+lb tomatoes came from a truss that had more than one flower on it?

Growing giant tomato for the first time is fun. The flowers, even on the singles, are just gigantic.

All depends on the shape and how it's put together, I'm only looking for WR potential and if I don't see it on the first truss I cut off the plant and add it to the compost bin,that way I have more room for other vegetables. I don't really count the number of fused but more about how its put together.

That is interesting Dan...so if i am reading that correctly, all your WR's were grown on first truss? Or does it mean that if the first truss looks good, you keep growing the plant and aim for a good one higher?

All WR have been on first truss, that's why I don't mess around with waiting for one higher up.in the past I've grown plenty of 6 and 7 pounders higher up but I'm not the least bit interested in anything but the BIG ones.

I start between 20 and 30 and then cull down to few less, then as soon as I see the development of the first truss blossom I'll discard most of them and plant other vegetables, yesterday I lost my best one ever to ber,it was 19dap with a 26" circumference and weighed 5.8 lbs so on we go,we win some and loose many.
