I'm now to top 45 tomatoes. I figured I would finish out the 7lbs. Same result as before almost all tomatoes 10-7lbs come from two tomatoes. I have 2 I'm unsure of because I'm having problems chasing back the genetics.

7.18 Harp. Tim Pennington seems to have knowledge of older seeds. Makes the Dunkels tomato fertilizer.

I am curious Scott...when researching these over 7 lbs...have you noticed how many are from a seed that is more than a couple of years old?

Several tomatoes were grown off 2-5 years old seeds. Just a few tomatoes were older than that. There were quite a few that had seeds 8-10 years old down in the genetics that grew 4-6lb tomatoes.

thanks scott, this winter, I started first seeds that were 4 years old and then a week later seeds that were one year old. The one year old seeds are ahead of the older ones even though they were started later. Not quite a fair comparison though because they are different varieties. I think speed of development is affected by age of seed. The question is: at first truss flower, is there a difference other than how fast it occurred.

Try "abusing" your plants a bit more bnot. Cold temps should give better blossom fusion? I had some gnarly first truss megas on plants that were more or less abused. Nothing wrong with 40 degrees or less at night in my experience. I think the last thing you want for megas is warm dry (low humidity) nights? They aren't human... :)

If you don't believe me, do an experiment! If you have time and inclination...

gritty, maybe try that another time...if I "abuse" my plant this winter it will be to reinvestigate the "nutrient blast just before 1st truss. I am thinking that well balanced high nutrient soil would just do this naturally.

James, I have been looking for my megamuttD seeds..so far I have only found a 2.92 grown from the 6.32 and the 5.24. I have not found the 6.32's yet.
Growing your own seeds year after year from a stable variety shouldnt affect the weight. The Megamutt was far from stable. Each successive generation starts to lock in more characteristics...no more dominate and reccessive genes.

I am going to go back this year and grow out some more 5.24's and see if I can start locking in the right combination...also will grow some of the F2 Delbruts. I am not sure how many....most I could grow for space would be about 300 plants. I wont be anywhere near that number this year.

I sent Gritty some of my 4.05 MMD a few years ago. I don't know how many times he grew them and how many years of seeds. Maybe the genetics would start stabilizing after a few years of Gritty growing them. I think they grew well for him the first year.

@ wile they were nice large plants, I did have trouble getting any megas beyond the first truss there was a nice triple on one plant but it broke judt before I could stake it up. I would like to try it again I think I have a few seeds left. Porkchops Frank the Tank domingo is one of the few plants that gave me good megas past the first truss.

@ bnot I think arctic blast on balanced soil would beat nutrient blast. I dont know of any top growers using nutrients in an unbalanced way other than being generous with the kelp fertilizer? Not saying it cant be done.
But have you ever seen a large doubled dandelion flower? Those seem to come out only in a cool wet spring where the plant is large and healthy. The conditions must very Irish. There must be some micronutrient, like zinc maybe, that is low in addition to the cool wet weather. Another guess is the ration of nitrate to ammonium could plat a role.
^ Well plenty of untrustworthy speculation I guess...
As far as I know, pumpkins and tomatoes are very much the same, as far as what works for pumpkins should work for tomatoes. Lots of overlap.
But with tomatoes you get BER whereas pumpkins you get those shrivel lines.

Primroses seem to grow "umbel inflorescences" under similarly favorable/unfavorable conditions... flower stalks vs single individual flowers. Its almost like the plant knows it needs to be sturdier, thicker, in order to deal with certain adversity.
Well, I'm not a fan of taking pampering too far.
For better or worse my philosophy at some point becomes paternal instead of maternal.

i just asked joe menting about the 4.79 martin 2011. He said it was grown from his 2.2 which was a clone from jacobus from the 7.18 harp
