Just a reminder to those starting their plants that they should only plant the biggest of their seeds and then only transplant the most vigorous of the seedlings that result. Try planting 2 or 3 seeds per pot, if you have enough seeds, and then discard the runts or weakest less vigorous from each pot. Choose only the best for your garden. I know most of you already knew this and posted only for the few who might not.

Dang Marv although I may follow your advise you really ought to have documentation off my 8.22 plant from a couple years ago. Not only was it the runtiest of all the seedlings it looked like something the grocery store would discard in July. I only planted it because of who the momma was but after that it was my best plant and it did easily half the work... I dont know man! Sometimes when you roll the dice its better than not rolling them at all. Seriously imagine the worst looking grocery store toss out then a month later its my most beautiful plant...!

(Although we usually don’t have seeds to waste...we seed in little tiny cell trays and pot up twice ending up in solo cup size container....wouldn’t want 3 healthy Wr seeds in the same container)....good stuff Marv

G.Kins your experience was what is often referred to as an outlier. For very special seeds, one per pot is the way to go, especially if you only have one seed. lol You get the idea.

I am kinda with G. Kin on this one. (Not that I am an expert)
All my Tomatoes got the same care, same ferts, some pruning, etc.
On the 15th of June, I had 4 extra, stunted in pots, half watered plants that I tossed in to fill some barren spots in the Garden. 2 got eaten within a week. the Remaining 2 grew my largest Big Zac, and my Largest Domingo.
Now I can come up with 20 reasons that those plants produced better than the rest, but had it not been for my inability of finding parsnip seeds, and my choice to cull a few pepper plants and not plant them, My PB with be 12% lower than it is.

Hmmmm. For those who grow their stunted plants I have one question. How many of those plants have produced 6, 7, 8 or 9 pound tomatoes? Do you want to go big or are you trying to grow 3 or 4 pounders? Whatever floats your boat. Just saying.

Well for me, I haven't hit 6 yet. So there is that.
Last year I had 3 over 5 and one just under. All but four of my plants went in the ground the same day. The roots were just starting to curl to the outsides of the container. Then there was the other 4 (2 got Eaten). The 16-18 original did amazing, and produced what they did (5 over my previous PB of 4.67) Then there was the other two whose plants were not as big, or as healthy, but the fruit did well.
Do I think had I planted those in the same spot at the same time as all the rest that they could have done even better, yes I do. Do I feel that planting at the proper time with good feeding and care is the best chance of growing monsters, you bet ya.
I am uncertain if the biggest plant will necessarily lead to the biggest fruit.

Marv my little winky one grew my best at five pounds and it ber'd one that I felt would have been better than five pounds. I think it was a watering mistake.
