It is still a bit unknown but seems similar to blossom end rot in tomatoes. Once I get gourds set I start feeding calcium but even then I will have one trellis black tip and the other one is fine. Some long gourds produce rounder bottoms and seem to do better with it. I used to call it witches nose as the tip shrivels up to look like a cartoon figure of a witch.

I had a 142 incher on my plant this year that had the black tip and then grew my 152.25 off the same plant and it was absolutely fine.
