Ok so me and Wayne are having a little contest between us. Looks like we will draft 5 growers between us. We will use the best GPC weight for each grower for our team total. Since Wayne isn't growing and I get to obviously pick myself (as my last pick). Our friendly wager has will be donated to charity (St Jude Childrens Hospital). Wayne has picked Frank Mudd as his first pick. As my first pick I'll take Chris Kent.
Team Wayne Team Jeremy
Frank Mudd Chris Kent

Your pick Wayne...

Based on my estimates, Wayne is facing close to a 300 pound disadvantage in advance of his final choice. If I were in his shoes I first of all would tap out! Knowing Wayne, that won't happen, so..I would research these..Bartoli, Bright, Neptune, Edwards, Barlows and the batcave dude.

12/2/2017 8:47:20 PM

Charles B.(Team GWG/WWGG)

Bartoli has grown several over 300

For the sake of keeping the history of CC's in play I was going to select Mr. Lloyd Bright as my 5th pick, but b/cause I trust Captain Hook, I will pick another Kentucky grower...John Brammer!! & glad that I did!!! Peace, Wayne
C'mon Jeremy, so many incredible growers left on the table...extend it to 7, so I have a chance to catch up on my 300 # disadvantage?
And once again I will ask...who is Rodney Register?

Smoky Mtn Pumpkin (Team GWG)

maybe there should be a third team ???? If they win, both wayne and Lindley have to pay ! ;)

12/3/2017 7:39:23 AM

Smoky Mtn Pumpkin (Team GWG)

sevierville, Tn

how about a "the field" team. The top 5 growers who are not in wayne and Lindley team will make the third team. Meaning at season end, their weights will be used. No one will know who gets in till the final weightoffs are done. !

Chris, and if the "field" team comes in 3rd, then who ponies up the charity $'s? Mr. Wexler seems to be on board for paying up for charity, if "field" team looses? Or did I misread his post?

Peace, Wayne

Charles B. & Chris also seem to be voting on the "field" team! I am okay w/this idea, if the "field" team comes up w/donation $'s to St. Judes, if they don't win it all!!! Peace, Wayne

12/7/2017 6:23:05 AM

Smoky Mtn Pumpkin (Team GWG)

Wayne, any grower not on Jeremy or your team is on the field team. .... so its your 5 against Jeremy's 5 against the field 200+ growers. lol now you see why i like the field odds !
can't wait to see the melons come in.
come on spring !

12/7/2017 6:32:48 AM

Charles B.(Team GWG/WWGG)

Grant, AL

I like anything’s odds where you have 200+ of something compared to only 5 even though the 5 on the 2 teams are many of the best growers. There is always surprises though!

12/7/2017 6:53:23 AM

Team Wexler

Lexington, Ky

Wayne, go grab a cold one before you start on this...lol

Results based on these two teams 2017/2016:

2017
Wayne 1,401 (+58 lbs)
Jeremy 1,343 (+53 lbs)
Field 1,290 (-112 lbs to win)

2016
Jeremy 1,302 (+46 lbs)
Field 1,256 (+85 lbs) (-47 lbs to win)
Wayne 1,171

Statistically speaking, if just one of the 10 growers on the two primary teams doesn't make it to the scale or has an off season, the Field gets an easy runner up finish at worst. If one Field melon scales in the top 10 that would almost assure a runner up finish as well.

Variance by Team: Field Team (+/-34 lbs), Team Jeremy (+/-41 lbs), Team Wayne (+/-230 lbs)

Two year variance by Weight: 1st Place: Wayne 2107/Jeremy 2016 (+/-99 lbs), 2nd Place: Jeremy 2017/Field 2016 (+ 87 lbs) 3rd Place: Field 2017/Wayne 2016 (+ 119 pounds)

The Field Team on average is -79.5 pounds for the win. Of the 10 members that comprise the two Field Teams, 7 different growers live in NC, TN, Ky, AK...aka "The Belt"

Okay, anyone not picked on the two teams is eligible for the field team, depending on the weights...the top 5 are the field team. I get it, already!!! Still waiting for someone to pony up $'s for St. Jude's for the field team?
LOL & Chris...so not starting your own plants is okay? LOL

Wayne, it is I that stated that you were at a 300 pound deficit. When the statement was made, you had only 4 members, it was a warning of sorts to pick your 5th member wisely. Your 5th member eliminated the deficit.

And no, you are not +58 on the two year average. Your team didn't fare so well in 2016. The field beat you by 85 pounds.

12/8/2017 6:18:04 AM

Team Wexler

Lexington, Ky

Wayne, you kindly got screwed with your picks. Jeremy should not have been able to reserve himself in my opinion, I don't really understand with him being Team Captain that he would get that privilege.

If Jeremy wanted to be on his own team, he should have chosen himself first, that would have opened up the door for Chris to be on your team.

If Jeremy doesn't pick himself as first pick, then that would have opened up the door for you to pick him for your team.

Based on 2017, that's a 300 pound swing that you're on the losing end of.

It's going to be close and no doubt will be very entertaining. I can see this spilling over into other fruit categories and perhaps in the years to come. Great idea, great cause...born right here in the watermelon forum!

So, if we now have three teams...Wayne, Jeremy, & Irrelevant? Why not open this up to more donations to St. Jude's? How about, anyone that wants can pick a winner, w/a promise of at LEAST $10 donation to St. Jude's if there pick does not win? (Wanted to say $25!!). I will supply nice BLUE (1st place) ribbons for all who pick correctly!!
