I have noticed that some growers are placing some pea gravel around the base of the plant, (stump area).
What does this help with ?

I think it is just to help with drainage around the stump. I think it is only placed on top of the ground around the stump also.

i did it for stump splash back because my soil is toxic with fusarium any splash seems to set in with issues as well as hold moisture even with stump cover windy storm can still sneak some splash in there(especially on pumpkin). thats just me though

I use what we refer to at work as well sand.
I drill water wells for a living,and once you put the well casing in the ground you fill the hole around the screen in the well with this finely crushed gravel.
Sorta has the consistency of cat litter.
Jake Holloway gave me the idea for that.
He has had his share of issues with stump rot and wrote a nice piece on it in a GWG newsletter sometime ago.
I think he fills his planting hole with gravel to help with drainage issues.
