I got off the phone with Lloyd bright awhile back and I mentioned to him about the hybrid black diamond watermelon. Has anyone grew the watermelon before and what was the total weight and size when you grew it how many days it takes from seed to fruit that's the final result. Thanks.

I am a bit perplexed at this point...Hybrid black diamond & Jumbo black diamond are both names that I have heard mentioned. Are they the same? I think Superman's black diamond (new world record) was called a Jumbo (205#...officially weighed at KGPG weighoff)!!! Proudly stated!!! Peace, Wayne

They are from female Yellow Belly Black Diamonds crossed with male Blue Rinds from 156 pound seeds. They are used in Black Diamond contests in Texas. Eighty pounds at a Black Diamond contest in Texas is huge.

A few growers plant out of both but most tend to continue using own seed lines. The auction prize money at Luling goes to a dozen or so growers with the largest melons. The bidding om most of the melons seems to be based on growers than on the melon weights. All of the winning growers at Luling are well compensated for their entries.

The prize money is though. Three to four thousand per melon on the low end.

I think the contest in Texas is for people who live within a certain distance.

The Luling contest is for members of its local watermelon growers association. They are very supportive of their growers. To hear an auctioneer ask for a starting bid of ten thousand dollars for a Black Diamond watermelon and get an immediate response is amazing.
