Im with you Andrew. Got one I planned on taking to VA state fair on Friday that would probably do well. I am oh so close to that 200 lb mark, and melon still growing. Now I think I will gamble and leave it till October and Raleigh. Probably won't do as well there, but that 200 is a goal for me.

I only planted 2 this year, lost one to bacterial wilt. Not going to be at Elkin this year but good luck to everyone.

Hope so, so voting yes. Jake, sure about bacterial wilt? I've never seen it in watermelons. Even commercial ones. Great to see weights going up!

No not for sure, was not tested. I know watermelons are supposed to be resistant, but I had a wave of cuke beetles come in and after I killed them the melon stopped and the vine started wilting. I know some other growers that lost plants like this after cuke beetles came in. I had 2 plants do it in 2010. What do you think it might be Dave?

Its not real big. Decent for me. I lost some good growth between day 40 and 55, I guess because of cloudy weather. It has been a slow growing melon, but it has grown longer than any I've had.

Jake. I'd guess fusarium if it got it when it was in the early vining stage. I've lost a few over the years in a commercial patch that I felt was fusarium but generally a plant or two in a row. Didn't get them tested either to get confirmation. There is an ailment that is in the earlier stages of being diagnosed referred to as Mature Watermelon Vine Decline (MWVD) but as the name implies it hits late after melons have set. I suppose it could have been a mutant plant susceptible to bacterial wilt.

It had no brown streaking in the veins and the plant was full grown, so I didn't suspect the F word. The vines had no water in them when it split it open but looked clear. I had never heard of MWVD. Is it carried by vectors? This wilting a few of us are seeing comes right after the first cuke beetle invasion each year.

Don't think they have isolated a vector. Plant a bio fumigant or solarize the patch while it's still hot. Can't hurt.
Wonder how closely related the plants are that are going down. Could be a genetic defect that allows them to be susceptible to BW. Just thinking out loud.
Looks like MWVD has been around longer than I remember. I'm getting old fast. https://www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/BP/BP-65-W.pdf
