What's the purpose of the sand around the stump of your plant? What kind of sand is used?

Course or agricultural sand is used. The purpose is to provide excellent drainage around the stump so that it has little chance of rotting. I also added a bunch of pea gravel to one of my growing areas this year to help with drainage and also I have heard worms enjoy the tiny rocks. Most of my soil is really thick with worms this year. At least so far it is I mean to say.

Will play sand work?

Playground sand should be fine but it will have smaller particle size and so will be slightly less desirable.
