Last season I didn't use anything to cover the ground as a result weeds ended up giving me a hard time. Anyway I was thinking about using straw for ground cover this year just wondering what others think about using straw, or would I be better off using the fabric ground cover?

I have heard that landscape fabric (or similar) with with wood mulch on top works well. Probably better than straw. The wood is rather inert and not going to tie up nitrogen because it is separated from the soil.

I used to use landscape fabric. These days I mulch heavily with compost and most weeds will not come up through it. I do have some weeds to battle but my plants don't have to try to root through fabric.

i grew my eating melons on straw about 3 inches thick they were probably the best melons i have ever grown and when you picked them they were nice and clean on the underneath and it only improves your soil the weeds will come through at the end of the season where its a bit thin or has broken down
