What is the most important criteria to you when selecting which one to pollinate and which to grow for the summer.
Do any of you measure size at pollination or at day 10? Is that a good way to pick the potential of the melon size?

as long as the polination day melon is normal size, that doesn't seem to mean anything. Just like pumpkins, the growth after that & at the bench marks are very important...as is the gains after day 50 ! So yes, day 10,15, etc tell you what the melons potential is.

What has it grown? What has the grandparents grown.I dont think shape means much ,as one plant can produce many different shapes.

You are a bevy of information and statistics Chris. I would like to see the growth curves of your big melons. Would you be able to graph out the curve of the 350 and post it?

cant post graphs here...probally could take a screen shot & put it in my diarey. LOL i track & measure everything...thats what i get for being an accountant ;) Starting from the number of pollen grains used to polinate with.... to how many rain drops fell on the plant....to how many leaves the plant had....to the root structure post mortum ! note=the melon must finish for the numbers to work....if it stops early, then you won't make it.. day 10 isn't cut and dry as they don't always make the chart at day 10. d10=14 to 17 d20=60 to 70 d30=110+ d40=150+ d50=190+ d60=210-220

I think the number crunching is not really that important. It is what it is.It will be what it will be.Get started early as possible and let her grow!!IMHHO
