What is the minimum distance from stump you will try a melon? I've got one I found a few days ago, only 18" from stump on a secondary. Would you try this, or go ahead and pull? It's by far the fastest, best looking melon on the plant. I pulled a little slack in the vine this morning just in case.

Jeb, I think most growers would go with the fastest and best looking melon on the plant no matter where it is on the plant.I mean we can't always achieve the best melon 12 or 15 feet out on the main vine.I think the main thing is the plant have decent size before we set a melon on it.

Go with the best, its getting late to be choosey ! I have grown 230+ on a side 3 inches from the stump, but the side was 6 feet long.

I'm gonna cut the other 1 off in morning. I have freed the vine up, and moved it back so I've got some slack when it really starts expanding.

It was the first vine ( a secondary) off the main, & the set was 6 feet out.
