A few posts down smoky mnt p said that the pear shape comes from setting them on a hot day.
My question is : will they grow out of the pear shape ?

I have never had one grow out of one completely. But I have seen them get a little more proportional. I usually cull them.

Zappa, if you are still getting pear shapes and are hand pollinating, you might try adjusting your procedure. I get fewer odd shapes on hand pollinated fruit when I use an extra soft brush and do multiple pollinations to the same flower. It takes an average of eight trips per flower by honeybees to get complete pollination of a watermelon flower. You also want to start with a female flower that has a well shaped ovary.
