I am looking for all opinions on this one. Why use plastic mulch over growing on soil?

I'm no expert , but I imagine ,melons are like tomato's and origanally came from the southern hemisphire and like warm roots.it helps heat up the soil and also helps to keep weeds down. Terry

John, its supposed to be a good weed barrier and yes warm the soil up abit. Not all the products out there are all that good at doing either. I used plastic mulch and bed sheets last year. Works great for a little while on the weeds, but I just now got all of it up out of the patches , what a pain. I used grass cuttings around the tomato plants, peppers, brussel sprouts and broccoli and it worked perfect. Used about 5 inches worth for a good weed barrier and man it warms the soil and I can plow it right in at the end of the season. So this year I'm useing grass cuttings and straw all the way around.just my opinion and plans. I let my lawn go a little long at times and use a John Deer pull behind grass collector. Work smarter not harder, lol.
