Well it is time everyone has their melons set if they are going to be competitive this year. And it is too early to give anything away for your weigh-off(s) for all you sand-baggers out there. So what you got going so far ? I'll start. My largest melon has been growing since June 6 and is close to 140 pounds. I hope to take it to the Tennessee State fair in Nashville on September 5. I have another melon about a month old that is about 130 pounds and is growing well. And my big hope is my 285 Edwards that is about 18 days old and perhaps around 80 pounds. It is a nice long melon and I am hoping to fatten it up real good before the Allardt weigh-off in October. It should be around 90 days by then.

I'm hoping to have one for the TN State Fair, Bear Wallow, and Allardt. I will probably take one to local fair, just because, I always have. I have 3 melons that look good now, but that could change in a day. I have another on the 236 Edwards plant that's only 8 days old, so we'll see.

I havent figured out weights yet! I do know this I have 2 melons growing on the 260 & 1 on the 228.The 228 started out with a 3/4 inch circum bigger then the 260.its been over a week now there both still only 3/4 of an inch apart.Heres the kicker the 260 is on the mv,the 228 is on a finger vine.

I'm about the same as Cantond. 57 lbs at day 22 on my 282.2 Dawson. We will never get that Southern growth, out side up here, at least I dont think so. Mine went 6 pounds last 24hrs and 3 pounds the 24hrs before that. My 291 Kent is about 3 lbs per day over the last 3days. @ 47 pounds day 23.

My best melon developed some stump issues but is growing about 2lbs a day, 282 day 55 180lbs, 260 day 35 130lbs, 228 day 30 140lbs, 251 day 18 70lbs, 251 day 10 35lbs. I lost 4 of my plants to cercaspora leafspot early this spring so hopefully I will have several ready for Bear Wallow. The 260 and 228 are my best growing melons now, I hope they can keep it up for 54 more days.

Rumor has it there will be a giant melon at Bear Wallow.

I have 2 282 Dawson plants going. The plants are more than large enough to grow monsters, but I had a lot of learning to do, and this first year has taught me some, as has some great growers. I now know why great growers use landscape fabric, drip irrigation, and pine needles. I have been out of town for two weeks during my melon growth time, and the weeds have found me in full force. It's day 28 for one, and 29 for another. Biggest of the two is 90 lbs. today, day 29. With all the rain, and cloudy days, I'm not too disappointed. Hoping to keep in the running for the long haul. Both of mine are on finger vines, and both are open pollinations.

It is day 20 on my 285 Edwards and I decided to take my first measurement on it.The 80 pounds I stated for it on the 22nd was just a ballpark guess. It will go very light to the chart, by the way, as it is a very long and skinny melon right now. But the OTT score was 145". And so that equals 93.4 pounds on the GWG chart and 90 pounds on the GPC chart. This melon has amazed me so far. I will be very a very happy camper if this melon keeps growing well until the Allardt weigh-off. :o)

But with the grafted root system and gummy stem disease I am experiencing with all my plants, I have no great expectations.

Day 25 on my 291 on 7/25, 64CC, 27SS, 41EE for a 132 OTT, estimating 69 pounds.
I have 2 fruits on my 282 Dawson. One is 12 days old, 116 OTT48 pounds estimate, one is 14 days old, 118 OTT, 50 pounds estimate. I am going to go down to one after I get a good feeling about which one to keep. Both are long fruits.

I have been busy and not writing stats down and I have discovered I was very wrong on the age of the melon on my 285 Edwards. I looked at a picture of it taken on July 8 and it was already 12 or 15 " long. I am now thinking it was pollinated around June 24. Anyway that is my best guess. That would make it about 35 days old when I measured it yesterday at 111 pounds. So it is barely doing 3 pounds a day. I was getting excited over nothing. But it may still end up being a fairly nice melon I think.

I haven't measured any of my melons at this point, other than a few quick measures to determine which to keep and which to pick. I will say that I have the best look fruit this year ever, and if the heat holds, it should be a good year.
