Is anyone getting odd shaped fruit besides me? Doesn't seem to matter if they're controlled or open pollinated, or what genetics. Banana, pear/gourd and a few hourglass. Is it heat? Can't decide when/if to cull them. Most are growing well, just ugly.

I have only one melon with a good shape to it. All my others are as you described. I simply go with whatever looks like it is growing the best.

Brotherdave, I have had three twin sets and females with the male flower growing out of the side of the female. It has to be the heat and lack of rain. We have not had any rain for two months now so my plants are not doing to well, despite my best efforts to keep them wet.

My 185 was a pear shape. That's why I called it butternut ;) It never totally outgrew it but I think if I would have been able to finish it out it might have. At weigh off time, the blossum end was still fatter than the stem end but not by much

my experience says only slight pears grow ok. anything else stays a pear. once a pear, always a pear, its just that you can get a good melon from a slight pear.

I believe the flower is inconsistently taking up the pollen during the heat. None of my pollinated and iced females were odd shaped this year. Some of my open pollinated ones were. We have had consistently 90-100 temps here, even topping out at around 102.
