How soon do watermelon seedlings need fertilizer? And what is the preferred product?

My seedlings are just starting their 1st true leaf. So I know they can't handle anything too strong. How about a weak solution of seaweed and fish emulsions? Also, how soon should the seedlings be planted? Mine are in 2 quart containers.

I never fertilize melons till there in the ground about 2 weeks or so.I plant asap.need sunny warm days over 60 nites hopefully high 40s or so.you will have to cover them till nite temps get over 50.You will kill seedlings real easy with ferts.

Be really careful with the ferts until the weather starts to heat up and the plants get growing. Young melons are very sensitive to high salts from fertilizers. Fish and seaweed should be Ok to use in moderation though. I have got mine in 2 gallon pots they should be ready to go into the garden in a couple of weeks. You may be able to squeeze a couple more weeks out of your 2 quart containers. You may want to plant into bigger pots if the weather outside isn't warm enough It is hard to say without seeing what your plants look like.

Thats where I'm at 2 qt containers will go in the ground may 1st,if not I will put in 1 gallon containers on may 1st.Melons grow slow so dont try & push them they will catch up when the weather is right.Mine are 8 days old 2 cots,no sign of a 1st true leaf.I wouldnt worry about the root bound thing. it dont matter, once they hit the soil & the weather permits there will grow fine.Fertz not needed its in the soil.

1/8 teaspoon of Miracle Grow 15-30-15 in 2 quarts of water everytime you water. I learned this from a book and I use it for all my plants I start form seed with very good results.

It's good to hear from you Kyle. I agree with what you have to say. A 1/4 strength solution of a miracle grow type fertilize is just fine for a young plant from day one.
