On average how many feet out from the stump do you pollinate your fruit?

I planted mine the Melon sisters 12.5 feet apart,& they had about 20 feet to grow forward it was the first time I made the plant grow in 1 direction.I used to plant in the center of my spot. Now I plant at 1 end & grow 1 way. They had about a 12X24 space each plant they were however back to back with outside plants about 5-6 feet away.

I don't start pollinating until the third melon on the main vine emerges. This gives the plant and roots time to develop. I like to set the melon on the main vive 8 plus feet from the stump. I have 4 acres so space is not an issue, currently I am planting 30 feet apart.

Distance apart is not as important as how many spuare feet you allow for each plant. 200' sq. is enough to grow a huge melon. I would recommend you keep it down to 300' sq. or less.

Thanks guys. It's my first year growing a giant watermelon and I was planning on growing two plants but due to space limitations am only going to grow one. I have two nice plants growing so I'll choose the most vigorous when the plant is set in the patch.
