The GWG has a new category to announce for this year. George Kopsell from Tennessee has generously given the GWG money to be used for the membership which we are using for the mystery melon award. This category is not for the heavy hitters (whoever you are). If you have a melon placing in the top 20 of the GWG, you will not qualify for the mystery melon. The weight for the winning watermelon will be somewhere between 120# and 170#. The weight selected by the GWG board to win this category will not be released until after the GPC weigh offs are all over. That is what makes it a mystery melon. The winner will be the one who has a watermelon closest to that selected weight without going over. In case of a tie, the award will be split. To receive this award the watermelon must be weighed in at a GPC site and be a member of the GWG. The mystery melon award will be $30 and a 1 year GWG membership. GWG Committee

That is a nice thought by our committee members to come up with a award for a lesser grower. I suggest that committee members think about a award for a new grower of the year. This would be a little something for the biggest melon grown by a new member not in the top 20. Just my thoughts.

Mark we didn't say it would be 170#. We said between 120# and 170#. If we had to we would make it 110# to 160# But that will not happen. Thanks anyway.
ISG Thank You!!!! You can send money to superbangbang@msn.com Same e-mail as your dues. Marvin

Wow...what great members this club has!! Thanks very much to 1SG and to Handy!!
We will have a couple emails sent back and forth for confirmations.... but right now I can say I will add the membership prices from my company, so the 2 mystery melons will have a $100 prize plus 2013 membership dues paid, and the 2nd mystery melon will have a $50 prize plus 2013 membership dues!!
Thanks once again from the GWG committee..... good luck to all in 2012!!

Cliff and Mark have stepped up huge!! Thanks guys...
So just to be clear.... it's looking like this...
1st Mystery Melon... $100 plus 2013 membership.... this will be a watermelon from 100 lbs to the first melon below the 20th place prize.
2nd Mystery Melon.... $50 plus 2013 membership.... this will be a watermelon from lowest weight to 99 lbs.
This way all our members have a chance to win a prize this year!!
Once again same rules apply... the melon must be weighed at a GPC Sanctioned site, the member must have dues paid by June 1st 2011, and the watermelon must be undamaged in sound condition.
Good Luck to all on this contest...

I was kind of hoping for a grafted 260 Clementz but it didn't work out.Cliff, I think I should probably take a year off to think about it if I can't at least make the top 20 this year.I feel my plants are too early. I was so very late getting my plants to start growing last year, I think I over reacted. And I had no idea that grafted plants and grow lights together would equal such a fast start for my plants. Another issue I have is 32.1% organic matter. I fear this may cause soil disease problems. Anyway the grow-lights are put away and more cool weather is on the way so perhaps slowing these plants down a little for now might be a good thing for me.

Mark, the method is simply called grafting. There are several different techniques. The technique that Nathan uses is called the insertion method. There are several good videos on youtube. Just type in "grafting" in the site search box and you will find several good videos.

Mark, I did have a grafted 228 Clementz I was going to grow. My daughter gave it away without thinking. I tried to get it back and it had already been planted. I am not sure if the grower knows enough to do any good with it.

So do you have 3 scales for 3 melons to grow on Mark ? It is going to be very interesting to be able to see every pound your melons actually gain.

I found a digital one,it gos to 400 pds,The melon would have to lifted everyday to weigh it.To much hassle.I would scream like a girl if the Drama Queen dropped her end of the melon.lol,Its a great scale 80$ on E-Bay picked up for 16$ at a resale shop.I will use it to weigh after harvest if I want to know,It kinda ruins the fun if you know what they weigh already.I knew what the 228 weighed prior to Andy Ts it took the fun out it I knew Bill had me with his 234.So I think I will be busy plucking weeds & spoon feeding the Melon sisters Generation II & there cousins the Kin Queens. The twisted sisters In there tandem caves.lol No time to weigh them, maybe I will use that on the FP(162/81) lift on lift off type deal there much tougher & lighter.Ive got my hands full to keep the kins healthy.Lots of new products I have never used before.Over 2500 feet on ground to weed.Wish me luck!
