I founded the GWG so there could be prize money, nice picture holding plaques.I noticed Chris Kent received very little for his World Record 291.So I formed this group a 4 man committee and started my own club.Phil Hunt gave me the advice on doing this & I preceded. We have a great Club,With over 6 thousand dollars raised this year its doing great.I started growing for fun & prize's,yep call me a dirty rat I like prize's.lol I dont like committees, & arguing on how the money is spent. With that being said I'm giving up my seat on the GWG committeso I can go have fun.I have discussed this with Chris, they say at this point they will bring on 2 more members on committee, most likely a Canadian & a Rebel to make it more Wold wide.Im truly proud of the Club I founded, just not wired for politics.I hope everyone grows a 300 lb melon this year 1 lb. smaller then mine. They will be upset that I posted this.I dont know Why?Everythings hush hush!LOL "This town needs a Enema"LOL

Please don't do this Mark. You are the best committee member the club has. You share what you know. You are generous. You have a great sense of humor. It is your club. PLEASE reconsider.Don't burn this bridge behind you.

Mark i think you had a great idea starting this club..The club has done great. I hate to see you give up your seat but i know down deep you are doing it for the benefit of the club. I hope you stay active with the club, auctions, looking for sponsors, etc. Look at all the extra time you will have to grow a big melon next year... Dennis i'm sure no bridges have been burned or will be burned .. Good luck mark on that 300 pounder... Thanks for getting such a great club going. Kirk Webb

Hey Mark, you've done a great job with the GWG & I was pleased to be able to help you with some suggestions & advise. Your love for the hobby & your drive to be the best you can is a great benefit to the club & it would be a shame to see you step down. It's a tough job on the the executive, as you just can't please everyone. Just try to do what you feel the majority of the members want.
Members must remember that this is a new club & it takes time to work out the bugs. Suggestions are welcomed, but they are only suggestions & the club can only do so much with what they have. My suggestion to the growers/members is to be patient & give the executive some time & you'll see how great this club can become in a year or two.
The GWG has over 100 members in 2 years. That's pretty impressive. Thanks for all that you've done for us melon heads. Good luck this season.

Hey Mark, is your offer to pay $100 for the largest melon grown from your 260 still good ? I think most of us would want to grow that seed anyway. It has the best parents in the giant watermelon growing world. I hope it proves to be as good as either one of it's parents and hopefully the combination will make it even better.

Mark, thank you for your hard work and generousity. I know that what ever the reason you have made this decision, it is right for you. We all listen to the signs we are given and I know that things happen for a reason. You will always be first in the GWG. We all need to respect this decision and not look past it as nothing more than that. Because of the GWG, we all will have a chance to grow a 300 pounder. Your dreams of making this great for everyone has started and will continue. We will all be knowing that as we succeed, you and the rest of the GWG membership will be happy for each other. Thanks. Scott

Well said Scott. Mark will always be known as the GWG founder. I guess it is kind of like Lennon and McCartney wrote: Let It Be. I certainly hope no one has any hard feelings. I know I have been passionate about what has been going on with our club. I only want what I feel is best for it; as I think we all do. But now soon you will have a five member committee to get that figured out. There will be no more ties and I expect we will hear little from the committee aside from the decisions they make.

Just one question Chris or Mark or anyone. Will the new members be permanent or limited in their term ? At some point I think the committee should be answerable to the members.I thought it was nice when we were able to vote on having a logo. Now I see it was all because you could not agree amongst yourselves. I only fear that the committee may run this club with disregard for what members want.I think limited terms for new committee members would head our club in a good direction. And, as I feel this is a very important change we are making, I think that new committee members should be voted on by all of us. We need nominations and an election. Or is this going to be a club that is tightly controlled by five people, all with unlimited terms ?

Dennis I'm just a member now,so I cant answer your question about term limits.I do know there not going to run the Club on this forum.I know most dont understand my whistle blowing and and are mad at me for it.Thats okay the reason I didnt bow out quietly is I wanted to create an awareness in the Club on these problems. When the dust settles the committee will make an announcement, most likely through E-mail to all members telling them the furture decisions on committee & such.It will be good, I trust Chris & Marvin & the new members will do a group conscience on most everything.Be patient GRASSHOPPER!They will do this in there time frame not ours. Thanks for caring Dennis your a champ in my book. There waiting for these posts to stop before they make there next move.GWG ROCKS!!!!BABY!!!!

Starting a new club is very challaging & something that I know a little bit about. To be successful, you must have the backing & the trust of the membership. They might want to quiz the membership & ask them what they would like to to see in the club (newsletter, web site with own message board, free seeds, awards, prize money-yes or no, fundraisers, etc). This would be a good beginning & likely give the executive some great ideas for the club. Good luck. You have our support.
