What is girthest melon you know of being grown? and what is the longest melon you know of being grown? Would crossing them be a good idea?
I know the 217 Vaughn was 45" in length grown off the 249 Bright.

My 291 & my 264 form 2010 were both 67" girths. Hope that helps.

One of, if not the longest I've seen was Todd's 282. Looked like a scudd missle.

Todd's 282 melon was 223" OTT. Chris' 291 was 220" OTT.Sounds like what you are proposing is the 239 Leonard (which grew the 274 Kent melon) x the 249 Bright (which grew the 217 Vaughn). Hey Mr. Bright, do you have any 249's left ? I would cross it with my recreation of the 239 Leonard genetics. I believe it would take the next generation to get any results though. I would love to try it. You had an excellent idea weatherman. I have thought about that before as others probably have but I have never persued it. Has anyone ever made this cross before ?

Dennis- If you are trying for the largest watermelon weight possible with great length, you should consider planting the 291 Kent or 282 Dawson.

Lloyd,I will certainly have to give those two more consideration. There are just so many fine genetics out there and I am trying to cut down to six plants. Somehow I am starting to get the feeling I may go with 9 hills again. Actually though, I am more interested in the seeds that grew the 291 Kent and the 282 Dawson. I have a 255 Mitchell but I will have to go with my 197 Leonard x 211 Leonard cross instead of a 239 Leonard.I had a 291 last year and my soil was so messed up I didn't get a pollination until late July and that was an open pollination.
