My melon today was a late starter end of July pollination was tasty as can be,less than 60 days on the vine,All the books I read that stated 80 days to ripen were wrong!135 lbs 56 days old & great melon!

I've been inclined to think that growing conditions, particularly things like weather, can have a bigger impact on ripening time than one might expect.
Last year the little bitty melon I got off the vines was picked at only 46 days old, IIRC, and it was actually overripe.

You've certainly done a fantastic job this year Mark. I can't wait to see how your big ones turn out.

I have 2 mellons to get weighed. My first weigh off option will be day 81 this week for my bigger one or D90,or D98. Am I getting into a risky period of over ripening or fruit going down leaving on the vine? Its not a monster but will be my entry for GPC Master Grower. Should I just get it to scales asap? The other one is a week older.

If plant is healthy & temps cool should be fine!If stem looking brown or plant not good I would harvest,or if no growth for 5 days.Just me.We all have to make our own calls.Hard to do sight unseen.

Well, I'm glad you busted that myth Mark. My melons will be ripe in 56 days or less.

Peter, as Mark said, they will go along time if healthy. I would choose the 81 or 90 day options if possible. If the bottom is dry & healthy, then no problems. If unknown & not growing, choose the earlier date.
