How much weight will a watermelon lose in one week after being cut from the vine.
I realize this is probably a % question.

Thanks for any help.

Does storage situations make much of a difference...ie.. in a cooler (frige, walk in cooler) or just in the shade or garage at room temp? Peace, Wayne
PS...some folks w/ AG's leave vine on, and submerge vine in bottles of H2O, on both sides, would this be possible w/ melons & help minimize weight loss?

Ive been told to harvest Melons, less chance of rotting, coons, vandals, etc.store in a cool dry place, like a basement,I have at walkout stays 65 year round & cooler. This is just opinion like most grower information.Theres actually very little thats proven, beyond the shadow of a doubt.in a basement I think you could reduce that loss to 1 lb. a week.I heard they dont like refrigeration.

I beat whats his name last year at.Allart with a mellon that was still growing and WHats his name had cut his a week before.. His did looses about 3lbs in that week. WE have always kept them in a cool dry shade spot after picking and they stay green and fresh til we seed them

Of course you should keep the stem in water, and you should keep the melon cool. I once kept a melon in the walk in fridge at the local supermarket to keep it going an additional week.

Tim Pennington had to pick a pumpkin last season early, can't remember why. He kept it in a walk in cooler for I think 30 days . He must have weighed it pryer to refridgerating. If I remember correctly, it lost a lot of weight, like 90 pounds. Refridgerators are cool and dry.Myself, I think I would keep one in a cool basement.

Of coarse that may be different than a melon. Maybe the more surface area the more the fruit will loose ?

Refridgerators will pull water from fruit!I dont think there considered dry.
