Hey Mark, that's two different growers of 188 pound melons. They had to split 4th place money. So fourth place actually paid each grower less money than was won by fifth place. Is there no justice in the world?

Congrats Chris and all at Nash. I was planning to enter but when I rolled it over it had a hole in the bottom big enough to put my fist in. It still weighed 272#'s with the hole in it.Oh well, I'm not complaining it was a good year.I'm already looking forward to next year. Best of luck to all who are still growing.Craig Peden

"Oh well, I'm not complaining". Dang Craig, your a better person than me, you would have heard the screams in TN if that were to happen to me. Sorry to hear it had a hole, but 272 is a true hoss, hole or no hole. Congrats!!

Owensboro, Ky.

TD, a lil confused, as usual...most weighoff's w/ ties would take 4th place tie, and combine the prize money for 4th & 5th & combine it and then split it evenly w/ the two w/ 4th place tie. 5th place then get's 6'th place prize money!!! Would be very surpized if this isn't what happened in Nashville!!!More important than that is? Congrats to Chris, Frank, David and awl!!!! How close does a weighoff get? & What do Chris, and Frank have left for BWF?Peace, Wayne

Thanks Ya'll, and congrats to the rest.

TD wrote it the way it was explained during the weigh-off. After the weigh-off and a quick review of the rules written in the premium book they were planning to do it the other way, PW's way.

Dang thats a big one to loose. I would have been crying...Craig what did you have under the melon to protect it ?

9/9/2011 8:36:46 AM

PW, I am fairly certain you haven't seen the best Chris has to offer this year. I would guess Frank also has some very nice melons left. We'll know soon.

9/9/2011 9:44:21 AM

Walking Man

Craig, I would be broken hearted to lose one that big. That's up in world record territory. I listened to Minnesota Melon Man and put 2x4's under my melons this year. I haven't lost any. What kind of surface was your melon resting on ? I feel they really need to be protected from whatever lurks in the soil.

Dave, I am glad to hear that in the end they didn't do anyone wrong as to the awards in Nashville. What the Master of Ceremonies told us was so wrong it had a lot of participants figuratively scratching their heads in disbelief. All's well that ends well.

I used the 2'' insulation you find at Lowes with lots of holes drilled in it.I'll rethink all that for next year. Dennis I didn't see where any critters chewed on it, but I agree that I need to protect it better next year.I pollinated on 6-15 this year.and it may have been to early. I left it in the patch a week or so too long. A hard lesson well learned!!! It would be interesting to hear what materials have worked well for other growers under the melons? 2x4's, sand, foam, etc.?

The 272 cross was the 243.5 Kent (f)x 247 Kent (m)

Craig, that 243 must be a good seed ! ;) Post us a picture & the measurements from that beast ! Sorry you lost it, next year for sure will be your year !

2x4"s have worked really well for me Craig. The 2" insulation also sounds like a good idea.

2x4s kind of wick moisture away from the melon. I ussually cut grooves all over them with a miter saw. I tried styrofoam cut into 2x4s it just rotted where it was touching the foam. this year I went with sand, it just wicked up water from the ground when it rained hard. Next year going back to 2x4s.

272 OTT meas. EE=63.5, SS=49.5, CC=98.5= 211.5
Chris, the 243 was a great seed for me this year and so was the 247. It grew a melon well over 200#'s, but it was selfed so I crossed the 247 kent (f)x 194 Zuerner (m). I picked it at about 80#'s for a seed melon. That should be a really good cross.

Craig, what was the girth & straight length on it ???

9/10/2011 12:03:52 AM

Owensboro, Ky.

Have heard about the 2x4's under melon's thing...? do you lay em down so 2 inch gap or stand em up so 4 inch gap between melon and ground? Spacing between 2x4's? Also curious (lots of variables I know)...if 98.5 cc went 272, what could have PHVic's 102 cc, have weighed? Just curious, and sorry for the side track (Hi-jack)? Hope to see you awl at BWF!!! Peace, Wayne
PS...anything under the 2x4's?

9/10/2011 2:23:50 AM

Im guessing girth 65 length 38.5

Hey PW bigger circum is not always heavier FAT PIGS Weigh heavy,The 272 was a fat big!

9/10/2011 5:50:08 AM

Walking Man

PW, I lay the 2x4's down flat and space then about 4" apart. I don't think it matters much as long as the melon is well supported off the dirt. I cut mine about 2' across.

9/10/2011 8:47:10 AM

Cleveland, Tenn

Chris,The 272 length was 37". As to the girth, I wasn't paying much attention at all to that measurement. Next year I plan on putting a tape under each melon to measure girth.

9/10/2011 10:44:26 AM

Walking Man

formerly RGG

Craig, I don't know if you use 2x4's but, their use allows the grower to place a tailor's tape under them any time he want to since there is open space running underneath across your fruit. Just another reason it is now my preferred method for protecting the underside of my melons. You must be really excited about next year after the monster size one you grew and lost. I'm sure you'll be able to make sure you have a sound melon next year. It's like the big one that got away, something like the 285 Edwards. That puts you in elite company.

I still have never lost a melon to rot that I had up on 2x4's. As for getting the tape underneath, that only works if there isn't a snake coiled up hiding under the melon.
