I was doing some crazy thinking (normal for me)and want confirmation. If a GWG member grower had a very large melon at a non GPC event; then the seed donation rule would not apply. Correct? I know you would be interested in seeds for distribution to members of the GWG & for seed auctions; but this melon would not come under the GWG rules if I remember them correctly.I do believe we are all interested in seeing others grow from our seeds so I think donations will never be a problem. But a member would not be compelled to donate seeds from a melon entered into a non GPC site, correct? If a huge melon went to a non GPC site and the member wanted to be included into the group donating to the seed raffle you would accept them I suppose?

Dennis, Correct, "But a member would not be compelled to donate seeds from a melon entered into a non GPC site."
No gpc site=no prize = don't have to donate.

Yes we would accept seeds for donation.

We are hoping winners will donate more then the mandatory amount! If im lucky enough to be in top 5 I will give Club 25 seeds for future years, they can bank them! This year we will have 2 auctions & may include some kin seeds like my 1421.5 stelts! Purse should be larger in year 2012!!

Tennessee Dreamer, God willing and nature cooperating I will blow away the Alabama State record next weekend (AUG 20th) at the Franklin County Watermelon Festival. Big Daddy is 62 days old, 61in girth 38in lenght OTT 210, and still chugging away at a 1/4in a day. I do plan on donating seeds to the GWG Club. The more seeds we have to auction the better the prizes will be.

Cliff, you should save one of those lunkers you are growing for a GPC weighoff. You should win a nice prize and perhaps the $1,000.00 first place for GWG members. And the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville is in early September and offers a $600.00 first prize.I hope to see you at one of these competitions. I think it would be great to own a state record.Do you know what weight you have to beat? I have a friend and neighbor named Chris Kent who is making it very difficult for other growers here in Tennessee to set a state record.:-)

Tennessee Dreamer, I have military duty in New York 9 Sep -2 Oct, so I am limited in where I can compete in a weigh-off. I will be at the Washington County, AR weigh-off Sep 3rd. The problem is that my next best melon is 43 days old now and around 175lbs if it survives it will only be 63 days old at the time of the weigh-off.

Sorry, the Alabama State record is 210lbs, I'm not sure what you can do about your neighbor, maybe a couple hundred pounds of rock salt next time it snows this winter, it would take years to figure that one out

Chris, It would take care of any weed problems you might have. You have to look on the bright side of things.

I had the record with 199 until last year when Billy Roberts of Eva, AL took it using my seed. The guy has been growing CC's for thirty years, He has had his year to bask in the glory.

CLIFF sounds like you have a good melon. Are those certified scales in franklin county? The scales in our local weighoff are not they can be 10 pounds heavy or light.I would take the time to weigh that one on certfied scales if they do not have them. GOOD luck and keep it growing Jerry

Jerry, I do recall seeing a sticker on the scales but it was probably 20 years old. I just recently bought an industrial floor scale, and have sent away for the state certification, hopefully it comes in by the 19th. I can allways fall back on the COOP scale it is certified. I hope to see you next weekend!

You can go to a local scrapyard there scales should be certified on a annual basis!Take a 5 lb bag of sugar & place on scale to see if accurate!Get on the scale yourself & see what you weigh! You should know what you weigh,my 191 last year was 192 on bath scale weighed 191 at scrapyard!I would get it certified at 3 or 4 places if a new record!

It is amazing how different scales can be. I've got a set of 80 year old cotton scales. IT's never been ajusted and it has weighed with in a half of a pound from the scales at Elkin and Adlart, so if it's to far off from it I don't trust it too much.
