In growing pumpkins a lot of folks try to keep the stump area dry to prevent rot issues , by placing something over that area. Should I treat my melon plants the same ?

As my plants grow, i don't water any closer then 2-3 feet. I covered the stump(very small table ) later in august to keep it dry like a pumpkin.

I grow on plastic & have no choice but to water the stump directly. What I have done is trained the runners on bricks which keeps them up out of the moisture from watering. I had a couple of runners die last year close to the stump from being in the dirt and getting too much moisture. The way I am doing things this year I don't think I will have a repeat of that problem.
