Start ASAP. Most growers do start indoors, especially the ones up north.Carolina Cross takes up to 90 days to mature after pollination.

I know this seems strange but if there are any growers this far south this might help. Through trail and error I have found that the first of may is best for me. If I start to early the Georgia heat will fry an old plant in August. I rarely get a melon over 60 or 70 days if I start early. If I wait I have plants getting some age on them in September after it cools off some. Ussually get about 90days out of a fruit that way. I only thing is you have a narrow window to set fruit. July 4th Is the deadline for setting down here. Our fruit grows really fast but longevity and consistant growth is a challenge.
