Just wondering if anyone remembers a diary entry last year that showed a few pictures of someone growing watermelons out of large containers on a concrete or deck surface? I think it was a European grower but I can't find it? If I remember correctly they where growing on a black mesh material? Thanks Bumkin

I know there is a gentleman in Alaska who was growing out of big pots and he ended up with some respectable size melons.

I don't think Spudley ever told us the weights of his melons last year. They were greenhouse grown in what looked like 25 gallon pots. They definitely do get rootbound in pots and so the bigger the pot the better I suppose.I think he was probably doing what is the best method for him in Alaska. I doubt if the ground ever gets really warm enough to produce ideal growth. In the lower 48, this method of growing a big one would be novel but I doubt if anyone could produce any records this way.

Is it possible he had the bottom of those pots cut out so the roots could grow down ?

The floor of the greenhouse was covered so that wasn't likely, check out the pictures.
